About this variety

The Hanging Basket Sweet Pea! Just imagine the familiar fragrance of Sweet Peas growing in a basket near an open window, or hung outside the front door. New specially bred Sugar n Spiceâ„¢ is a compact variety guaranteed to spice up your baskets and containers and its fragrance is every bit as sweet as its taller cousins. Sugar n Spiceâ„¢ comes in a spectacular colour range, including bicolours, with blooms produced all along the short stems and from each leaf node, forming a ball of rich colour. The plants are naturally neat and compact so there is no need for pinching.

Sowing Info
Sow October indoors, or March to April outdoors, at 20-25°C (68-77°F) on the surface of a free draining, damp seed compost, 3 seeds per 7.5cm (3 inch) pot. Cover with a layer of compost 1cm (1/2 inch) deep. Place in a propagator or seal container in a polythene bag until after germination which takes 10-21 days. Spring sowings can be sown outdoors, 2.5cm (1 inches) deep in drills 7.5cm (3 inches) apart.

Growing Info
When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3 inch) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise plants to outdoor conditions before planting out in spring when the ground has warmed, 23cm (9 inches) apart.

Aftercare Info
For best results, provide a rich, moist, well-drained soil in full sun. Water plants freely in dry weather and remove spent flowers regularly to prolong flowering period, an application of manure may also be beneficial during growth.

When to buy and plant

Use the sowing dates on the packet. Some seeds need indoor sowing and transplanting; others can be sown directly outdoors when conditions are suitable.

Planting and growing

Follow the packet for sowing depth, spacing and germination conditions. Choose suitable seed compost where required, label varieties and avoid letting seedlings dry out.

Aftercare

Thin or transplant seedlings as directed and harden off indoor-raised plants before planting out. Water and feed for the crop or flower you are growing.
