Overview

Amano Shrimp are busy grazers that explore leaves, wood and stones for algae and biofilm. Their translucent bodies and dotted markings blend neatly into planted aquariums.

English name Amano Shrimp
Latin name Caridina multidentata
Origin Japan and neighbouring East Asian coastal river systems
Adult size 4-6 cm
Typical lifespan 2-3 years, sometimes longer
Temperament Peaceful; vulnerable to predatory tankmates
Tank level Bottom, plants and décor
Social needs Keep a small group with ample grazing and hiding places.

Tank Setup

Aquarium size At least 40 litres for a small group in a mature, stable aquarium.
Temperature 20-26°C
pH 6.5-7.5
Hardness 5-15 dGH
Water type Freshwater

Provide a mature filter, established grazing surfaces and shelters for moulting. Cover filter intakes with shrimp-safe guards.

Behaviour & Compatibility

Peaceful with suitable small tankmates, but vulnerable to predators and newly moulted individuals need cover. Adults live in freshwater; larvae have different salinity needs, so normal freshwater breeding is unlikely.

Diet & Feeding

Supplement natural grazing with suitable shrimp pellets, algae wafers and small portions of blanched vegetables. Do not expect algae alone to feed the group.

Routine Care

Use a fully cycled aquarium before adding livestock. Check temperature, appetite and behaviour daily. Test water regularly: ammonia and nitrite must remain at zero. Make regular partial water changes with conditioned water matched to the aquarium's temperature and chemistry. Keep nitrate low and rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water.

Check any medication is safe for shrimp, especially products containing copper. Leave a clean shed shell for grazing when water quality permits.
