Overview

Pearl Gouramis combine delicate pearl-like spotting with long feeler fins and a calm swimming style. They show their best colour in a quiet, planted aquarium.

English name Pearl Gourami
Latin name Trichopodus leerii
Origin Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo
Adult size 10-12 cm
Typical lifespan 4-6 years
Temperament Generally peaceful with appropriate companions
Tank level Middle and upper
Social needs Avoid crowding males; provide visual barriers and room for females to retreat.

Tank Setup

Aquarium size At least 120 litres with a 90 × 35 cm base; groups and communities need more space.
Temperature 24-28°C
pH 6.0-7.5
Hardness 2-15 dGH
Water type Freshwater

Provide dense planting, floating cover and gentle surface movement. Keep access to air above the water and use a lid to retain warm, humid air.

Behaviour & Compatibility

Generally peaceful, although males defend nesting areas. Avoid fin-nippers, aggressive cichlids and very boisterous companions.

Diet & Feeding

Offer small omnivore pellets or flakes, supplemented with daphnia, brine shrimp and other suitable frozen foods.

Routine Care

Use a fully cycled aquarium before adding livestock. Check temperature, appetite and behaviour daily. Test water regularly: ammonia and nitrite must remain at zero. Make regular partial water changes with conditioned water matched to the aquarium's temperature and chemistry. Keep nitrate low and rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water.

You can order online for Click & Collect. We will confirm when your livestock is ready to collect from Newlands Home and Garden Centre, Clondalkin, Dublin 22. We do not deliver live fish or aquatic invertebrates. Please have a suitable, fully prepared aquarium ready before collection.
