Choose shade planting for your own garden
A shaded space can vary from a bright border with a little morning sun to a darker area beneath trees. Before choosing plants, observe the light and check whether the soil tends to stay damp or dry. Compare individual plant requirements rather than treating every shady position as the same. Link shade planting with spring colour or a wider cottage garden scheme, and visit our qualified horticultural team in Clondalkin for help choosing the right combination.
Observe the light
Notice how much direct sun reaches the area and at what time of day.
Check the soil
Consider moisture and drainage as well as the amount of shade.
Combine foliage and flowers
Compare leaf shapes, colours and seasonal features for a balanced display.
