The half-banded spiny eel (Macrognathus circumcinctus), also sold as a zig zag eel, is a shy, burrowing freshwater fish from Southeast Asia. This juvenile measures approximately 6–8 cm and needs an aquarium planned for its adult size of around 20 cm.

Overview

Origin: Southeast Asia. Adult size: around 20 cm. A specialist choice for a mature, peaceful aquarium with a generous floor area.

Behaviour

Mostly active in dim light and at night. It buries itself in soft sand and retreats among wood, plants or caves during the day. Cover every gap in the aquarium lid, including around equipment.

Tank Size

Provide a long, well-filtered aquarium with ample floor space; plan for an adult fish rather than its current juvenile size. Soft sand and secure hiding places are essential.

Compatibility

Generally peaceful with appropriately sized fish, but an adult may eat very small tankmates. Avoid aggressive fish and delicate tiny species. Check that companions share its soft-water requirements.

Diet

Offer suitable frozen or live invertebrate foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and small crustaceans. Feed after lights dim if the eel is shy, and make sure it receives food before faster tankmates take it.

Care

Maintain clean, well-oxygenated water at approximately 24–27°C, preferably soft and slightly acidic. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero, test regularly and perform partial water changes. Use smooth décor and soft substrate to protect the eel as it digs.
