Origin

Southeastern United States and parts of the Caribbean; commonly found among shrubs, trees and vegetation.

Temperature & Humidity

Maintain approximately 22–26°C by day with a modest night-time drop. Aim for moderate humidity around 50–70%, with excellent cross-ventilation. Provide tiny drinking droplets by lightly misting part of the enclosure, allowing it to dry between mistings. Never spray the spider directly or expose its enclosure to direct sunlight.

Enclosure

House individually in a secure, well-ventilated, vertically oriented enclosure. An adult may be housed in approximately 15 × 15 × 20–25 cm, with appropriately smaller accommodation for juveniles. Provide cork bark, twigs and plants, especially in the upper section, and choose a front- or side-opening design that will not disturb its silk retreat.

Diet

Offer suitably sized live invertebrates: fruit flies for small spiderlings and appropriately sized flies, small crickets or other suitable feeder insects for larger animals. Remove uneaten prey, particularly during moulting.

Handling & Temperament

Alert and inquisitive but delicate and capable of sudden jumps. Keep handling minimal and close to a safe surface; never pull the spider from its silk retreat.

Lifespan

Usually around 1–2 years, varying with sex and individual circumstances.

Care

Provide bright, indirect daytime lighting, regular access to water droplets and secure climbing structures. Avoid overheating and excessive dampness. Do not disturb a spider that has sealed itself into a retreat to moult.

Breeding

Experienced keepers only. Pairing can result in cannibalism; animals must otherwise be housed separately.

Care requirements vary with age and condition. Our reptile team can advise on the particular spider available.
