The dwarf flag acara (Laetacara curviceps) is a small South American cichlid with subtle iridescent colour and a generally calm temperament. This listing is for young fish measuring approximately 3–4 cm.

Overview

Origin: South America, including the Amazon basin. Adult size: approximately 7–9 cm. A pair can make an attractive centrepiece in a peaceful community aquarium.

Behaviour

Usually peaceful for a cichlid, but a bonded pair may defend a small area when spawning. Provide planted areas, driftwood and sheltered places alongside room to forage.

Tank Size

Allow at least 75 litres for a pair, with a larger aquarium for a community or multiple individuals. A mature, well-filtered tank is important.

Compatibility

Choose peaceful fish with similar water requirements, such as suitable small tetras and catfish. Avoid large, aggressive species and allow territorial space if keeping a pair.

Diet

Feed a varied omnivorous diet of quality small cichlid granules or flakes, supplemented with appropriately sized frozen or live foods. Avoid overfeeding.

Care

Keep the water stable at approximately 22–26°C, preferably soft to moderately soft and mildly acidic to neutral. Maintain zero ammonia and nitrite, test water regularly and perform partial water changes. Acclimatise new fish gradually.
