Overview
The Red Flame Tetra, also called the Von Rio Tetra, is a small Brazilian tetra whose red colour shows best in a settled shoal with shaded planting.
Behaviour
Keep at least 8–10 together. Males display to one another, and a proper group encourages natural behaviour. Adults are approximately 2.5–4 cm including the tail.
Tank Size
Our recommended minimum is 60 litres with a 60 × 30 cm footprint for a shoal. Allow a central swimming area; choose a larger tank for a community.
Compatibility
Suitable with Panda Corydoras and similarly sized peaceful fish sharing its temperature range. Avoid large angelfish and other predators. Do not use a Ram-temperature aquarium.
Diet
Feed crushed flakes or microgranules small enough for their mouths, plus frozen Daphnia and Artemia. Spread food across the shoal so dominant fish do not take it all.
Care
Maintain 22–25°C within the species’ 20–26°C range, pH 5.5–7.5 and 1–12 dGH. Use plants, dark substrate and shaded areas. Introduce only to a mature aquarium; keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and change 25–30% weekly. Allow recently introduced fish time to settle before judging their colour.
