Overview

The Black Samurai Plakat is a short-finned male betta with a dark body and contrasting metallic scales. Pattern and scale coverage vary between individuals.

Behaviour

This active plakat patrols its aquarium and may jump. House one male alone; short fins do not make him less territorial.

Tank Size

Our recommended minimum is 40 litres, around a 45 × 30 cm footprint, heated and filtered, for one male. Use a secure lid with a gap of air above the water.

Compatibility

Do not house with another male or routinely with a female. A dedicated aquarium is safest; brightly coloured, long-finned fish and fin-nippers are poor choices.

Diet

Offer small betta pellets, with frozen Daphnia or Artemia for variety. Feed measured portions once or twice daily and remove uneaten food. Use a consistent feeding location.

Care

Maintain a steady 25–27°C, pH 6.0–8.0 and 1–15 dGH. Provide plants, smooth shelter and gentle filtration. Check heavy scale coverage around the eyes over time; if food is missed, present it nearby at the same spot. Test ammonia and nitrite at zero and change 25–30% weekly with conditioned, temperature-matched water. Inspect lid openings around cables.
