Overview

The Electric Blue Ram is a selectively bred blue form of the Ram cichlid from the Orinoco region. It needs warm, soft water and an established aquarium.

Behaviour

A compatible pair may defend a patch of substrate. Two randomly selected fish are not necessarily a pair; watch for sustained chasing.

Tank Size

Our recommended minimum is 80 litres with an 80 × 30 cm base for one compatible pair. A community or multiple pairs need more floor space and separate territories.

Compatibility

Choose peaceful species suited to 27–30°C, such as Cardinal Tetras in a suitably sized aquarium. Panda Corydoras and cooler-water species are unsuitable. Avoid hard-water specialists and aggressive cichlids.

Diet

Offer small sinking cichlid granules and frozen Artemia or Daphnia. Feed near their territory and confirm both fish eat; fast tankmates can outcompete them.

Care

Maintain 27–30°C, ideally around 28°C, pH 6.0–7.0 and 1–10 dGH. Use sand, planted boundaries and flat stones. Never add to an immature aquarium. Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero; use small, regular temperature-matched changes, adjusting frequency to nitrate readings. Do not force pH down with sudden chemical changes. Confirm tap-water hardness before purchase.
