Desert Goby

Overview

Common Name: Desert Goby
Scientific Name: Chlamydogobius eremius
Origin: Central Australia
Adult Size: 5–6cm
Lifespan: 3–5 years
Temperament: Peaceful but Territorial
Care Level: Moderate

The Desert Goby is a hardy freshwater fish native to the arid inland waterways of Australia. Known for its adaptability and interesting behaviour, this small goby develops attractive colours during breeding displays, with males showing brighter blue and orange hues. It is an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a unique and active bottom-dwelling species.

Behaviour

Desert Gobies are inquisitive and spend much of their time exploring the bottom of the aquarium. Males can be territorial towards one another, particularly in smaller tanks, so providing multiple hiding places is important. They can be kept singly, as a pair, or in a group with plenty of space and cover.

Tank Size

Minimum Tank Size: 60 litres

Provide a sandy or fine gravel substrate with rocks, caves and driftwood to create territories and hiding places. They appreciate moderate water movement and a secure lid, as they are capable jumpers.

Compatibility

Suitable for peaceful community aquariums with similarly sized fish.

Good tank mates include:

  • Rainbowfish

  • Small Barbs

  • Peaceful Tetras

  • Corydoras

  • Other peaceful Australian native species

Avoid aggressive or overly territorial fish that may outcompete or harass them.

Diet

Carnivore

Feeds on:

  • Small sinking pellets

  • Frozen bloodworms

  • Brine shrimp

  • Daphnia

  • Live foods

Feed once or twice daily with a varied, protein-rich diet.

Care

Water Temperature: 18–30°C
pH Range: 7.0–8.5
Water Hardness: Moderately hard to hard

Desert Gobies are extremely hardy and tolerate a wide range of water conditions, provided they are stable. Maintain good filtration and perform regular weekly water changes. A well-established aquarium with plenty of shelter will help reduce territorial behaviour and encourage natural activity.
