Clown Isopods (10 Pack) | Armadillidium klugii
Overview
A starter group of 10 Clown Isopods, Armadillidium klugii, recognised by pale dorsal spots and reddish edging. No particular locality or colour morph is guaranteed. These terrestrial crustaceans can be kept as a display colony or used in a suitable bioactive enclosure.
Origin
The species comes from the eastern Adriatic region, where it shelters in limestone habitats. It needs a moisture gradient rather than uniformly wet tropical conditions.
Housing
Our recommended starter enclosure is a ventilated tub of around 20 × 15 × 15 cm or larger. Provide 5–7 cm of pesticide-free, leaf-rich substrate, decayed hardwood, a generous layer of hardwood leaves and cork bark. Expand the colony’s floor space as numbers increase.
Temperature & Moisture
Aim for 22–26°C. Keep one end, approximately a quarter to a third of the substrate, consistently damp with moss; allow the other end to remain appreciably drier. Do not let the entire tub dry out or mist every surface until soaked. Airflow is important.
Feeding
Leaf litter and decaying hardwood are staple foods, not just decoration. Keep cuttlebone available for calcium. Add tiny portions of vegetables and a little fish flake or dried shrimp weekly; remove leftovers before mould develops.
Behaviour & Care
Clowns roll into a ball when disturbed and can take time to establish a breeding colony. Avoid frequent substrate changes. For bioactive use, check the enclosure’s temperature and moisture before adding them; a hot, dry vivarium without a damp refuge is unsuitable. Maintain a separate reserve colony. Clean-up animals do not replace spot-cleaning.
