Overview

The Nicaragua or macaw cichlid is a colourful Central American species. Males may reach 25cm; females are usually smaller. Cichlasoma nicaraguense is an older trade name.

Scientific name: Hypsophrys nicaraguensis

Behaviour

Relatively manageable compared with some large cichlids, but still territorial. A bonded pair can guard a sizeable area; unrelated adults may fight.

Tank Size

Our recommended minimum is 300 litres with a 120 × 45cm base for one adult or a proven compatible pair. Other cichlids require a substantially larger aquarium, ideally 180cm long.

These are adult housing recommendations; choose more space when adding tank mates. Allow for space occupied by substrate and décor when comparing aquarium capacities.

Compatibility

Avoid tiny fish and very aggressive cichlids. Robust midwater companions may work in a large tank, but breeding pairs can drive them away. Have a separation plan.

Diet

Use complete omnivore cichlid pellets, vegetable-rich food and suitable frozen foods. Vary the diet rather than relying entirely on meat-based treats.

Use sand or fine gravel and stable caves. Secure décor before adding substrate because they dig. Attach hardy plants to wood or stone rather than relying on delicate rooted plants. Watch pair behaviour closely and provide refuges for a chased partner.

Add only to a fully cycled aquarium. Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0mg/l. Start with a 25–30% weekly water change using dechlorinated, temperature-matched water and adjust to test results and stocking. Rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water rather than under the tap.
