Behavior

Enclosure Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 40–75 gallons for a single adult; larger is better

  • Humidity: 30–40% (maintain dryness to prevent respiratory issues)

  • Temperature:

    • Basking Spot: 100–110°F (38–43°C)

    • Ambient: 85–90°F (29–32°C)

    • Night: 70–75°F (21–24°C)

  • Lighting: Full-spectrum UVB required for proper calcium metabolism


Compatibility

  • Best housed singly; adult males may be territorial.

  • Females can be housed together if monitored carefully.

  • Avoid housing with other species that may bite or stress them.


Diet

  • Omnivorous: mix of live insects and vegetables

    • Insects: Crickets, dubia roaches, mealworms (treat), superworms (occasionally)

    • Vegetables: Collard greens, mustard greens, squash, bell peppers

    • Fruits (occasional treats): Berries, melon, papaya

  • Supplements: Calcium powder 3x/week, multivitamin 1x/week

  • Feeding schedule: Juveniles daily (mostly insects), Adults 4–5x/week (mix of veggies + insects)

  • Provide climbing and basking opportunities for exercise and thermoregulation

  • Clean enclosure and remove uneaten food daily

  • Monitor for signs of metabolic bone disease, shedding issues, or parasites

  • Provide shallow water dish; hydration also from vegetables


Breeding

  • Oviparous (egg-laying)

  • Female lays 15–30 eggs in a sandy or loose soil nest

  • Incubation: 55–75 days at 85–90°F (29–32°C)

  • Juveniles require higher humidity and frequent feeding
