Overview

A Neon Super Colour ornamental strain of the rosy barb, a lively South Asian species. Adults commonly reach 8–10cm and may become larger. Males usually show stronger rosy colour; ornamental strains vary.

Behaviour

Keep at least eight together. Group swimming and displaying are normal, but an undersized group may direct chasing at tank mates.

Tank Size

Our recommended minimum is 120 litres with a 90 × 35cm base; 150 litres or more and 100–120cm length is better for adults or a mixed community.

These are adult housing recommendations; choose more space when adding tank mates. Allow for space occupied by substrate and décor when comparing aquarium capacities.

Compatibility

Use robust peaceful fish that suit cooler water. Avoid long-finned bettas, fancy guppies and slow, timid species because fin-nipping and feeding competition can occur.

Diet

Offer omnivore flakes or small pellets, vegetable-rich food, daphnia and brine shrimp. Include plant material rather than feeding only worms.

A temperate setup can work if room temperature remains suitable, but monitor with a thermometer. Do not maintain them permanently in very warm tropical conditions. Provide open swimming space, plants at the edges and good oxygenation.

Add only to a fully cycled aquarium. Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0mg/l. Start with a 25–30% weekly water change using dechlorinated, temperature-matched water and adjust to test results and stocking. Rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water rather than under the tap.
