Apistogramma Agassizii 'Double Red'

Overview

Common Name: Apistogramma Agassizii 'Double Red'
Scientific Name: Apistogramma agassizii 'Double Red'
Origin: Amazon Basin, South America
Adult Size: 7–9cm (males), 5–6cm (females)
Lifespan: 5–8 years
Temperament: Peaceful but Territorial
Care Level: Moderate

The Apistogramma Agassizii 'Double Red' is a stunning dwarf cichlid prized for its vibrant red finnage and striking blue and gold body colouration. Males are especially colourful, making this variety a standout feature in planted aquariums. Best suited to experienced aquarists, it thrives in well-maintained aquariums with plenty of hiding places and peaceful tank mates.

Behaviour

This species is generally peaceful but can become territorial, particularly during breeding or when establishing a territory. It spends much of its time exploring the lower levels of the aquarium and appreciates caves, driftwood and dense planting for shelter.

Tank Size

Minimum Tank Size: 60 litres

A well-planted aquarium with soft substrate, driftwood, rocks and caves provides the ideal environment. Dim lighting and tannin-stained water can help replicate its natural habitat and encourage natural behaviour.

Compatibility

Suitable for peaceful community aquariums with carefully selected tank mates.

Good tank mates include:

  • Small Tetras

  • Corydoras

  • Pencilfish

  • Hatchetfish

  • Peaceful Rasboras

Avoid housing with large, aggressive or highly active fish that may intimidate this species.

Diet

Omnivore

Feeds on:

  • High-quality micro pellets

  • Small sinking pellets

  • Frozen bloodworms

  • Brine shrimp

  • Daphnia

  • Live foods

Feed once or twice daily with a varied diet to maintain health and enhance colouration.

Care

Water Temperature: 24–29°C
pH Range: 5.5–7.0
Water Hardness: Soft to slightly hard

Maintain excellent water quality with regular weekly water changes. Soft, slightly acidic water is ideal, although captive-bred specimens are often adaptable to a wider range of conditions. Gentle filtration and stable water parameters are essential for long-term health.
