Bristlenose Catfish
Overview
Common Name: Bristlenose Catfish
Scientific Name: Ancistrus sp.
Origin: South America
Adult Size: 10–15cm
Lifespan: 8–12 years
Temperament: Peaceful
Care Level: Easy
The Bristlenose Catfish is one of the most popular freshwater aquarium fish thanks to its peaceful nature and excellent algae-eating abilities. Recognisable by the bristle-like growths on mature males, this hardy species is well suited to community aquariums and helps keep tanks clean by grazing on algae and leftover food.
Behaviour
Bristlenose Catfish are peaceful bottom-dwellers that spend much of their time grazing on algae, driftwood and aquarium surfaces. They are generally solitary but can be kept with other peaceful fish. Males may become territorial towards other male Bristlenose Catfish in smaller aquariums.
Tank Size
Minimum Tank Size: 75 litres
Provide plenty of hiding places using caves, rocks and driftwood. Driftwood is particularly beneficial as it aids digestion. A well-filtered aquarium with good water movement and oxygenation is recommended.
Compatibility
Suitable for peaceful community aquariums.
Good tank mates include:
-
Tetras
-
Rasboras
-
Corydoras
-
Rainbowfish
-
Gouramis
-
Livebearers
Avoid housing with aggressive or highly territorial fish that may harass bottom-dwellers.
Diet
Herbivore / Omnivore
Feeds on:
-
Algae wafers
-
Sinking catfish pellets
-
Fresh vegetables such as courgette, cucumber and spinach
-
Occasional frozen foods including bloodworms and brine shrimp
Feed once daily, preferably in the evening, ensuring enough food reaches the bottom of the aquarium.
Care
Water Temperature: 22–27°C
pH Range: 6.5–7.8
Water Hardness: Soft to moderately hard
Maintain excellent water quality with regular weekly water changes of 25–30%. Provide good filtration and plenty of oxygen. Although they consume algae, Bristlenose Catfish still require a balanced diet and should not be relied upon solely as a clean-up fish.
