Overview

A spotted bristlenose supplied as Ancistrus hoplogenys. This name is sometimes misapplied in the aquarium trade; an L-number cannot be assigned from the name alone. Plan for an adult around 15–16cm pending stock confirmation.

Scientific name: Ancistrus hoplogenys

Behaviour

Generally bottom-dwelling and cave-oriented. Adult males may dispute shelters, so one specimen is safest in a modest setup.

Tank Size

Our cautious starting recommendation is at least 150 litres with a 100 × 40cm base for one adult. Increase space for additional adults; confirm the stock identity before planning a pair.

These are adult housing recommendations; choose more space when adding tank mates. Allow for space occupied by substrate and décor when comparing aquarium capacities.

Compatibility

Choose peaceful fish with overlapping temperature and water needs. Avoid large territorial cichlids and competing cave-dwelling plecos in a restricted footprint.

Diet

Offer complete sinking pleco food, vegetable matter and modest protein supplements. Supply food directly; it is not a substitute for cleaning the aquarium.

Care

  • Temperature: 24–27°C as an initial planning range; confirm supplier holding conditions
  • pH: 6.0–7.5 as an initial planning range
  • General hardness: 3–12 dGH as an initial planning range

Use caves, driftwood and good surface movement. Monitor body condition and feed near the shelter in the evening. Confirm identification and holding water before moving it into unusually hard or very soft conditions.

Add only to a fully cycled aquarium. Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0mg/l. Start with a 25–30% weekly water change using dechlorinated, temperature-matched water and adjust to test results and stocking. Rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water rather than under the tap.
