The Black Driftwood Catfish (Trachycorystes sp.), belonging to the family Auchenipteridae, is a distinctive and intriguing species in the aquarium hobby, known for its unique appearance and behavior. Native to the Amazon River basin in South America, this species is characterized by its dark coloration, elongated body, and secretive, nocturnal habits.

Origin:
The Black Driftwood Catfish is native to the Amazon River basin, inhabiting slow-moving waters with plenty of hiding spots such as driftwood, roots, and dense vegetation.

Temperature:
The ideal temperature range for the Black Driftwood Catfish is between 24°C and 28°C. They thrive in warm, tropical water conditions.

Water Quality:
These catfish prefer a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 and do best in soft to moderately hard water. Consistent water quality and regular water changes are important for their well-being.

Aquarium Size:
A minimum tank size of 200 liters is recommended for Black Driftwood Catfish, as they can grow quite large, up to 40 cm in length. The aquarium should include plenty of hiding spaces, such as caves, driftwood, and dense plantations, to mimic their natural environment.

Feeding:
Black Driftwood Catfish are carnivorous and require a diet rich in protein. Suitable foods include sinking catfish pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, earthworms, and small fish. Feeding should occur during the evening or night, aligning with their nocturnal nature.

Lifespan:
In a well-maintained aquarium, Black Driftwood Catfish can live for several years, often reaching 5 to 8 years of age.

Community Tank Compatibility:
These catfish are generally peaceful but can be predatory towards smaller fish, especially at night. They are best kept with similarly sized, peaceful fish that share their preference for subdued lighting and ample hiding places.

Breeding:
Breeding Black Driftwood Catfish in captivity is rare and challenging. They require specific conditions and a carefully controlled environment to spawn successfully.
