Erythronium 'Dens-Canis', commonly known as the Dog's Tooth Violet or European Dogtooth Violet, is a delightful spring-flowering bulbous perennial. The name stems from the shape of the bulb, which resembles a dog's tooth. Native to Europe, it features elegant, nodding pink or sometimes white or lilac flowers atop slender stems, complemented by attractive, mottled green foliage.

Why We Like It

  • Elegant, nodding flowers add a touch of grace to gardens.
  • Mottled foliage provides added visual interest even when not in bloom.
  • Provides early spring color when many other plants have yet to awaken.

What to Know

  • Best planted in humus-rich, well-draining soil.
  • Prefers partial shade, mimicking its natural woodland habitat.
  • It's crucial to keep the soil moist but not soggy.
  • Avoid disturbing the bulbs once planted; they prefer to be left undisturbed.
  • Generally pest-resistant, though slugs may occasionally be a problem.

Planting Month Late summer to early autumn.

Flower Colour Typically pink, but can also be found in white or lilac shades.

Flowering Months March to April.

Height and Spread Height: 15-20 cm. Spread: 10-15 cm.

Erythronium 'Dens-Canis' is an excellent choice for woodland gardens, rock gardens, or shaded borders. When planted in drifts, they can create a breathtaking carpet of color in the spring.
