View full detailsPlan a longer season of flowers for pollinators
Use a mix of flowering periods so nectar and pollen are available across more of the growing season. Lavender, Nepeta and salvias suit sunny positions with appropriate drainage; verbena adds airy height and scabious, sea holly and selected coneflowers provide further variety. Choose plants for your soil and space as well as their flowers, and repeat small groups so visiting insects can move between blooms. Add seasonal planting to extend the display and leave some habitat within the garden. Different plants support different insects, so a varied planting scheme is useful.
Choose suitable open flowers and nectar-rich forms. A colourful double bloom is not always useful to pollinators.
Compare product flowering months and combine plants that flower at different points in the season.
Avoid spraying flowering plants visited by insects and provide suitable habitat and a safe shallow water source.
