Overview
The Golden Blue-Leg Baboon contrasts a golden body with metallic blue legs. This South African tarantula reaches approximately 12–15 cm leg span and creates substantial webbing around its burrow.
Origin
South Africa. A burrowing Old World species suited to experienced keepers.
Housing
House singly in a secure enclosure approximately 30 × 30 × 30 cm for an adult, with 15–20 cm of firm, burrow-holding substrate. Smaller specimens need proportionately smaller housing. Angle cork over a starter burrow and add low web anchors. Fill enough of the height to limit falls; an empty tall terrarium is unsuitable.
Temperature & Moisture
Aim for 22–26°C. Keep most of the surface dry, with a full water dish and a lightly damp lower corner. Small specimens need closer checks for dehydration. Provide good ventilation and avoid routine soaking of the webbing or substrate.
Feeding
Offer an appropriately sized cricket or roach near the entrance, without pushing it into a closed tunnel. Feed growing specimens about weekly, tiny spiderlings more often and adults every 1–2 weeks as appetite and abdomen condition indicate.
Behaviour & Care
Fast and capable of a painful venomous bite. Do not handle or hand-feed. Use long tools and have a catch cup ready; check the position of the spider before opening. Leave established web tunnels intact and remove waste only where safely accessible. Remove uneaten live prey within 24 hours and immediately if moulting is suspected. Do not disturb a spider on its back or open a sealed retreat. After a moult, wait until the fangs are dark and fully hardened before feeding; this takes longer in larger spiders.
