Know your animal

Read the species care guide below, then talk to our team about the right enclosure and feeding routine.

Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a fascinating fully aquatic salamander, recognised for its feathery external gills and remarkable ability to regenerate tissue. Unlike most amphibians, axolotls normally remain aquatic throughout their lives. They need a mature, cool-water aquarium and are best suited to keepers prepared to monitor water quality carefully.

Live animal – click & collect only from Newlands Reptile Centre, Dublin 22. We do not ship live animals. Please contact our team to discuss current size, colour and husbandry before collection.

Origin

Native to the lakes and canals around Xochimilco, Mexico. Captive-bred specimens are kept in aquariums; wild axolotls are critically endangered.

Temperature & Humidity

Water temperature: aim for 16–18°C; maintain a stable cool range of approximately 15–20°C. Avoid prolonged temperatures above 20°C, and never allow water to approach 24°C. An aquarium chiller may be essential during warm weather. Humidity is not applicable because this species is fully aquatic.

Enclosure & Water Quality

  • Provide a spacious, fully cycled freshwater aquarium; approximately 75–100 litres or more for one adult, with generous floor space.
  • Use dechlorinated water, gentle biological filtration, low flow and several smooth hides. Avoid sharp decorations and strong lighting.
  • Test water regularly: ammonia 0 ppm, nitrite 0 ppm, and keep nitrate low through partial water changes.
  • A bare bottom is safest for juveniles; very fine sand can be suitable for larger adults. Never use small gravel or stones that can be swallowed.
  • Use a secure cover and allow access to a quiet, low-stress environment.

Diet

Feed appropriately sized earthworms/nightcrawlers and quality sinking axolotl or carnivorous amphibian pellets. Juveniles require smaller, more frequent feeds; adults are usually fed a few times weekly according to size and body condition. Remove uneaten food promptly. Do not rely on feeder fish or mammal meat as a staple diet.

Handling & Temperament

Axolotls are delicate display animals rather than pets for regular handling. Avoid handling except when essential, using a suitable water-filled container for transfers. Keep singly as the safest default: fish may nip their gills and other axolotls may bite one another.

Lifespan

Commonly around 10–15 years with good care, so this is a long-term commitment.

Ongoing Care

Monitor temperature daily, test water quality, maintain the filter without destroying beneficial bacteria, and perform regular partial water changes. Watch for loss of appetite, damaged gills, floating problems or fungal growth; seek an experienced exotic-animal vet if concerned.

Breeding

Breeding requires specialist planning and capacity to raise large numbers of young. Do not house animals together solely for breeding without appropriate experience and facilities.
