Overview

Grade A koi are ornamental pond carp selected for their colour and pattern. This listing is for a young koi approximately 6-7 inches at sale; individual markings vary, and koi can grow much larger with age.

Behaviour

Koi are active, social pond fish that are best kept with other suitable pond fish in a spacious, mature outdoor pond.

Pond Size

Provide a large pond planned around the fish's adult size, with substantial swimming space and a deep area. A depth around 150–200cm is commonly recommended for a dedicated koi pond. A small ornamental tub or aquarium is unsuitable.

Compatibility

Keep with koi or other robust, compatible pond fish. Avoid overcrowding and check that smaller or delicate fish will not be stressed by larger, active koi.

Diet

Feed a good-quality koi food in portions the fish will consume promptly. Adjust feeding to water temperature and the manufacturer's guidance, and remove uneaten food.

Care

Use effective biological and mechanical filtration with adequate aeration. Test pond water regularly, particularly ammonia and nitrite, and acclimatise new fish gradually. Protect the pond from predators and maintain equipment through the seasons.
