Start by clearing weeds and matching plants to the light and moisture in the area. Ajuga, Bergenia and suitable periwinkles offer foliage coverage, while Aubrieta, creeping phlox and low sedums provide options for sunnier, well-drained ground. Euonymus can create a broader evergreen layer where its mature spread fits. Ground cover helps reduce exposed soil once established, but it will not remove the need for weeding at planting. Check spread and growth rate, particularly with vigorous periwinkles, and leave space around neighbouring plants.
Remove established weeds before planting so young ground-cover plants can establish without competition.
Match the species to sun or shade and to soil moisture; they are not interchangeable.
Use mature spread to plan spacing, then keep spreading growth within the area you want covered.
