The Clown Loach is an active, social loach with bold orange-and-black bands. Juveniles are small when sold, but this species becomes very large and needs a carefully planned long-term aquarium.
Overview
- Origin: Borneo and Sumatra, Indonesia
- Adult size: Up to approximately 40 cm
- Temperament: Social and active
- Swimming level: Bottom
Aquarium and water conditions
- Minimum aquarium size: At least 648 litres for a group, with a base of at least 180 × 60 cm when adult
- Temperature: 24–30°C
- pH: 5.0–7.0
- Water hardness: 1–12 dGH
Use sand or fine smooth gravel with wood, smooth rocks and numerous safe hiding places. Provide strong oxygenation, effective filtration, a secure lid and frequent partial water changes in a mature aquarium.
Behaviour and compatibility
Keep in a group rather than singly. Compatible companions must be chosen for an exceptionally large aquarium and warm, clean water; avoid delicate or very small fish and unsuitable cramped community arrangements.
Diet
Offer varied sinking foods, including quality loach pellets and suitable frozen foods, with some vegetable matter. Ensure each fish receives food.
Care notes
The small sale size does not indicate adult housing requirements. Avoid sharp crevices where a fish could become trapped and plan for this long-lived, large species before purchase.
