Overview

Canary Yellow Goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a yellow colour variety of single-tailed goldfish, with bright colouring that stands out against darker pond backgrounds. The fish offered is approximately 5–8cm at sale; this is a young fish, not its eventual adult size. Expect a large, long-lived fish and plan its home before purchase.

Behaviour

These goldfish are active swimmers and spend much of the day exploring and searching for food. They benefit from open swimming space and suitable companions. Leave a clear route through the planting rather than filling the whole enclosure with ornaments.

Tank Size

A well-filtered garden pond is the preferred long-term home. For indoor keeping, we recommend a long aquarium of at least 200 litres for one adult single-tailed goldfish, with substantially more space for a group. A smaller aquarium for a juvenile requires a planned upgrade. Bowls and small desktop tanks are unsuitable.

In a pond, allow at least 60cm depth, with a deeper section where possible for more stable seasonal temperatures. Choose pond volume, filtration and aeration for the full adult population rather than the current sale size.

Compatibility

Keep with similarly sized common goldfish, comets or shubunkins in a suitably spacious system. Avoid mixing these fast swimmers with slower fancy goldfish that can lose out at feeding time. Very small fish, fish eggs and tiny invertebrates may be eaten.

Diet

Use a quality goldfish or pond fish food suited to the fish's mouth size. Give modest portions that are consumed within a few minutes and remove leftovers. Adjust feeding to the water temperature and the food manufacturer's guidance; fish that are inactive in very cold water should not be encouraged to eat.

Care

  • Provide established biological filtration and good oxygenation before introducing fish.
  • Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and test regularly, especially after adding stock.
  • For pond keeping, a stable pH of approximately 6.5–8.5 and water around 4–24°C suit acclimatised goldfish.
  • Dechlorinate replacement tap water and avoid sudden temperature changes.
  • Protect outdoor fish from predators and keep an area available for gas exchange during freezing weather.

Acclimatise gradually, observe new fish closely and allow for growth to around 30cm or more in suitable conditions. Colour intensity can change as young goldfish mature; the image illustrates the variety.
