The Rummy-Nose Tetra is a tightly shoaling South American fish with a red head and patterned tail. Its colour is best in a stable, well-maintained aquarium with a sizeable group.

Overview

• Origin: Rio Negro and related Amazonian waters, South America
• Adult size: Approximately 5 cm
• Temperament: Peaceful
• Swimming level: Middle

Aquarium and water conditions

• Minimum aquarium size: A group of at least ten in an aquarium at least 90 cm long
• Temperature: 23–26°C
• pH: 5.5–7.0
• Water hardness: 2–15 dGH

Provide open swimming space, shaded cover and reliable filtration. Sand, wood and leaf litter suit a natural arrangement; plants are also suitable. Carry out weekly partial water changes.

Behaviour and compatibility

Keep at least ten together. Peaceful small tetras, pencilfish, Corydoras and small non-predatory cichlids are suitable companions. Avoid large or boisterous fish that would intimidate the shoal.

Diet

Offer quality small flakes or granules along with varied, appropriately sized frozen or live foods. Feed small portions.

Care notes

A fading red head can indicate poor conditions or stress. Keep the aquarium mature and water parameters stable.
