Overview
Panda Corydoras have a black eye mask, dorsal patch and tail-base marking. Native to the upper Amazon in Peru, this species is now named Hoplisoma panda, previously Corydoras panda.
Behaviour
Adults reach about 5 cm. Keep six or more pandas together; other catfish do not replace companions of their own species.
Tank Size
Our recommended minimum is 60 litres with a 60 × 30 cm base for six. Choose 80 litres or more for a mixed community.
Compatibility
Suitable with Flame Tetras and other small peaceful species at 22–25°C. Avoid pairing with Electric Blue Rams, which need substantially warmer water.
Diet
Feed small sinking catfish pellets or tablets and supplement with Daphnia, Artemia or bloodworm. Check that every panda reaches food before midwater fish take it.
Care
Maintain 22–25°C, pH 6.0–7.4 and 1–12 dGH. Provide fine sand, wood and shaded retreats with good oxygenation. Long-term hot water is unsuitable. Keep the substrate clean to protect the barbels; use a mature filter and avoid abrupt changes. Test ammonia and nitrite at zero and change 25–30% weekly with conditioned water.
