The Ember Tetra is a small, bright orange shoaling fish from Brazil. Its gentle nature and compact size make it well suited to a calm, densely planted aquarium.
Overview
- Origin: Araguaia river system, Brazil
- Adult size: Approximately 2 cm
- Temperament: Peaceful
- Swimming level: Middle to upper
Aquarium and water conditions
- Minimum aquarium size: 41 litres for a group, with a base at least 45 × 30 cm
- Temperature: 20–28°C
- pH: 5.0–7.0
- Water hardness: 1–10 dGH
Use dense planting, a dark substrate and some floating cover, leaving space for the group to swim. Driftwood and leaf litter can provide additional shelter. Gentle filtration and regular partial water changes help maintain stable conditions.
Behaviour and compatibility
Keep a group of at least eight to ten. Ember Tetras are very peaceful and do best with similarly small, calm fish such as small rasboras and peaceful bottom dwellers. Avoid large or boisterous tank mates that may outcompete or intimidate them.
Diet
Offer finely crushed quality flakes or microgranules, supplemented with small frozen or live foods such as Artemia nauplii and Moina. Feed small portions suited to their tiny mouths.
Care notes
A larger shoal is usually less shy and shows better colour. A mature, planted aquarium with gentle flow suits this species particularly well.
