Overview
The bronze Corydoras is a social South American armoured catfish, usually reaching 6–7.5cm. Its current scientific name is Osteogaster aenea; Corydoras aeneus is the familiar former name.
Scientific name: Osteogaster aenea
Behaviour
Keep at least six of the same kind, preferably eight. They forage together on the bottom and may briefly dart to the surface for air; continuous gasping is a reason to check water immediately.
Tank Size
Our recommended minimum is 80 litres with an 80 × 30cm base for six adults. Floor area matters more than height. Provide smooth sand and open feeding space.
These are adult housing recommendations; choose more space when adding tank mates. Allow for space occupied by substrate and décor when comparing aquarium capacities.
Compatibility
Suitable with peaceful tetras, rasboras or compatible livebearers where temperature and water chemistry overlap. Avoid aggressive cichlids and fish that monopolise the bottom.
Diet
Feed complete sinking catfish pellets and suitable frozen foods. Deliver food directly to the bottom, preferably at several points. They are not waste eaters and must not live on scraps.
Care
- Temperature: 22–26°C
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- General hardness: 2–15 dGH
Keep sand clean with gentle siphoning and avoid sharp gravel. Leave surface access clear and provide good oxygenation. Observe bellies and barbels: a sunken belly or damaged barbels calls for a feeding and substrate review.
Add only to a fully cycled aquarium. Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0mg/l. Start with a 25–30% weekly water change using dechlorinated, temperature-matched water and adjust to test results and stocking. Rinse biological filter media in removed aquarium water rather than under the tap.
