The Black Phantom Tetra is a peaceful South American shoaling fish with a distinctive dark shoulder marking and elegant fins. It is best kept in a planted community aquarium with a group of its own kind.
Overview
- Origin: Guaporé and upper Paraguay river basins, South America
- Adult size: Approximately 4 cm
- Temperament: Peaceful
- Swimming level: Middle
Aquarium and water conditions
- Minimum aquarium size: 72 litres for a group, with a base at least 80 × 30 cm
- Temperature: 20–28°C
- pH: 5.0–7.0
- Water hardness: 1–12 dGH
Provide plants, driftwood and open swimming space. A sandy substrate and shaded areas help the fish feel secure. Use suitable filtration and carry out regular partial water changes.
Behaviour and compatibility
Keep at least eight to ten together. Males may display to one another, particularly in a well-established group. Suitable companions include peaceful tetras, small Corydoras and other non-predatory community fish. Avoid large predators and aggressive tank mates.
Diet
Offer quality small flakes or granules alongside varied frozen or live foods such as Daphnia and bloodworm. Feed modest portions and remove uneaten food.
Care notes
A mixed group displays more natural behaviour and stronger colour. Maintain stable water conditions and provide cover without crowding the swimming area.
