Overview

  • Scientific name: Poecilia reticulata
  • Group: Livebearers
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful; males may pursue females

Aquarium and water conditions

  • Temperature: 20–28°C as a general guide for captive-bred livebearers; confirm the requirements of the individual stock
  • pH: 7.0–8.0
  • General hardness: 8–18 dGH
  • Setup: Filtered, heated aquarium with plants and open swimming space; size it for an adult group
  • Water quality: Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero; test regularly

Behaviour and compatibility

Maintain a compatible group; for mixed sexes, provide more females than males and space for fry.

Diet

Offer quality livebearer food, supplemented with suitable small frozen or live foods. Feed modest portions and remove uneaten food.

Care notes

Acclimate new fish carefully, avoid sudden changes in temperature or water chemistry, and maintain a routine of partial water changes. Confirm the precise needs of sensitive or wild-caught stock before purchase.
