Wilhelm's Dwarf Cichlid (Apistogramma wilhelmi) is a small South American cichlid. Its territorial breeding behaviour should guide aquarium and tank mate choices.

Overview

  • Scientific name: Apistogramma wilhelmi
  • Type: Cichlids
  • Temperament: Usually peaceful with suitable companions; territorial around a breeding site

Aquarium and water conditions

  • Temperature: Stable heated tropical aquarium; match the needs of this stock
  • Water: Test pH and hardness regularly, with zero ammonia and nitrite; avoid sudden changes
  • Tank: At least 60 litres for a pair as a group guide, larger in a community; offer visual breaks and separate territories
  • Setup: Fine substrate, plants, wood and caves or other sheltered spawning sites

Behaviour and compatibility

House with appropriately sized peaceful species that will respect its territory. Avoid keeping rival males in cramped quarters.

Diet

Offer quality cichlid foods and vary the diet with appropriately sized frozen or live foods. Feed small measured portions.

Care notes

Maintain stable water with regular partial changes and provide more cover if fish are being chased. Confirm the precise temperature and water chemistry of your fish before combining it with existing stock.
