Key Features:
Distinctive Appearance: A tiny freshwater snail from the genus Clithon, recognized for its compact, rounded shell with bold zebra-like striping and small “thorn” or spike-like projections on the shell surface. These spines give it a unique armored look compared to other nerite snails.
Graceful Movement: Slowly glides across glass, rocks, and décor, constantly grazing algae and biofilm. Despite its small size, it is highly active and visible in well-lit aquariums.
Behavior: Completely peaceful and hardy, often seen working in groups across tank surfaces.
Care Requirements:
Tank Conditions:
Thrives in stable freshwater aquariums with clean, oxygen-rich water. Ideal temperature is 72–82°F (22–28°C). Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline water with sufficient calcium to support shell and spine development. A mature tank with natural algae growth is ideal.
Diet:
Primarily herbivorous. Feeds on algae, biofilm, and detritus. Should be supplemented with algae wafers, blanched vegetables (such as zucchini and spinach), and calcium-rich foods to maintain strong shell and spine structure. Will not harm live plants.
Compatibility:
Highly peaceful and suitable for all community aquariums. Compatible with shrimp, small fish, and other snails. Should not be housed with snail-eating species such as puffers or large predatory loaches.
Size and Growth:
Adult Size:
Typically reaches 0.5–1 cm, making it one of the smallest ornamental nerite-type snails.
Growth:
Growth is slow and steady, strongly influenced by calcium availability and water stability. Like other members of Clithon, it does not reproduce effectively in freshwater aquariums, but is valued for long-term algae grazing and its unique patterned shell.
