Key Features:
Distinctive Appearance: Known for their small, rounded shells with bold ring-like patterns in shades of black, brown, gold, or olive. Each snail often has a unique shell design, making them visually appealing as well as functional algae eaters.
Efficient Algae Grazers: Constantly active cleaners that move across glass, rocks, driftwood, and plants. They are one of the most reliable natural algae control in freshwater aquariums and do not harm live plants.
Care Requirements:
Tank Conditions: Requires a stable, well-established aquarium with clean water and gentle filtration. Ideal water temperature should range between 72–78°F (22–26°C). Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline water, as harder water helps maintain healthy shell growth and prevents erosion.
Diet: Herbivorous, feeding primarily on algae, biofilm, and leftover plant matter. Can be supplemented with algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini or spinach, and calcium-rich foods to support shell health.
Compatibility: Extremely peaceful and suitable for all community aquariums. Can be kept with most fish and invertebrates, but should be protected from species that may pick at or eat snails.
Size and Growth:
Adult Size: Can grow up to 0.8–1.2 inches (2–3 cm) in shell diameter.
Growth: Slow growth, with lifespan and shell quality strongly dependent on calcium levels and stable water conditions.
Overview:
Vittina semiconica, commonly known as Ring Nerite Snails, are popular freshwater aquarium snails valued for their striking patterned shells and excellent algae-cleaning ability. They are best suited for beginner aquarists and thrive in stable community tanks with good water quality and mineral-rich conditions.
