Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii, also known as Chinese lantern or bladder cherry, is a herbaceous perennial plant that is native to China and Korea. It grows up to 60cm in height and produces green leaves and small, bell-shaped, white or pale pink flowers in the summer. However, the most distinctive feature of this plant is its inflated papery husks, which enclose the bright orange-red berries. These lantern-like husks persist through the winter, making it an attractive plant for autumn and winter interest in the garden.

Why we like it:

  • Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii provides a striking display of orange-red lanterns during the winter months, adding interest to the garden when many other plants have died back.
  • The berries can be harvested for use in floral arrangements or dried flower displays.
  • It is relatively easy to care for and requires minimal maintenance.

What to know:

  • Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii prefers well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade.
  • It can spread aggressively, so it is important to give it plenty of room to grow or contain it with regular pruning.
  • While it can tolerate some drought, regular watering is recommended for best growth and berry production.
  • The plant can be propagated by dividing the root clumps in the spring or by sowing seed in the autumn.
  • The berries are not edible and can be toxic if ingested in large quantities.

Height and Spread:

  • Height: up to 60cm
  • Spread: up to 1m
