Key Features:
Distinctive Appearance: Known for its flattened, ray-like body shape adapted for fast-flowing water, with a mottled brown and cream pattern that helps it blend into rocks and riverbeds. Its fins are splayed outward like suction pads, giving it a “mini stingray” look.
Strong Clinger Behavior: A highly specialized bottom-dweller that uses its fins to grip smooth surfaces. It spends most of its time attached to rocks, glass, or décor, grazing constantly on algae and biofilm in high-flow areas.
Care Requirements:
Tank Conditions: Requires a highly oxygenated aquarium with strong water movement to replicate fast-flowing streams. Ideal water temperature should range between 68–75°F (20–24°C). Prefers clean, well-filtered water with lots of smooth rocks, slate, and high surface agitation.
Diet: Omnivorous with a strong grazing habit, feeding on algae, biofilm, sinking wafers, and small frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and daphnia. A mature tank with natural algae growth is highly beneficial.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful and best kept with other non-aggressive, cool-water species. Should not be kept with large, aggressive, or overly active fish that may outcompete it for food or disrupt its environment.
Size and Growth:
Adult Size: Can grow up to 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) in length.
Growth: Slow to moderate growth, requiring stable, oxygen-rich conditions and clean water for proper development.
Overview:
Myers' hillstream loach is a specialized freshwater fish valued for its unique river-adapted body shape and peaceful grazing behavior. It is best suited for intermediate aquarists who can provide high-flow, well-oxygenated “river-style” aquariums with cool, stable water conditions.
