Key Features:
Distinctive Appearance: Known for its small, streamlined barb body with subtle metallic sheen and faint patterning depending on origin. It typically shows earthy tones like olive, bronze, or silvery hues, giving it a natural river-fish appearance rather than bright ornamental colors.
Active Shoaling Behavior: A lively and fast-moving schooling fish that prefers to stay in groups. It constantly explores the tank in mid to lower levels, creating steady motion and energy within a community aquarium.
Care Requirements:
Tank Conditions: Requires a well-maintained aquarium with stable water conditions and moderate to strong filtration. Ideal water temperature should range between 72–79°F (22–26°C). Prefers neutral to slightly acidic water and benefits from a long tank with open swimming space and some plants or driftwood for cover.
Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on flakes, small pellets, and a variety of frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and insect larvae. A varied diet helps maintain health and activity.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful and best kept in groups of at least 6 or more. Suitable for community tanks with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Should not be kept with very slow or long-finned fish that may be stressed by their activity.
Size and Growth:
Adult Size: Can grow up to 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) in length depending on exact species and conditions.
Growth: Moderate growth, with steady development in stable, well-oxygenated aquarium setups.
Overview:
Puntius mahecola is a lesser-known barb species in the aquarium trade valued for its hardiness, active schooling behavior, and natural river appearance. It is best suited for beginner to intermediate aquarists who can provide stable, well-filtered community aquariums with open swimming space and groups for proper social behavior.
