Key Features:
Distinctive Appearance: Known for its flattened, ray-shaped body built for clinging to rocks in fast-flowing water. It typically has a mottled brown, tan, or olive coloration that provides excellent camouflage against stones and riverbeds.
Hillstream Adaptation: A strong, specialized clinger that uses its fins like suction grips to hold onto smooth surfaces. It is highly adapted to fast-flowing streams and spends most of its time grazing and resting on hard surfaces.
Care Requirements:
Tank Conditions: Requires a highly oxygenated aquarium with strong water movement to replicate river rapids. Ideal water temperature should range between 68–75°F (20–24°C). Prefers clean, well-filtered water with stable parameters and lots of smooth rocks, driftwood, and high-flow areas.
Diet: Omnivorous with a strong grazing tendency, feeding on algae, biofilm, sinking wafers, and small frozen or live foods such as bloodworms and daphnia. A mature tank with natural biofilm growth is very beneficial.
Compatibility: Generally peaceful and suitable for community tanks with other non-aggressive species that tolerate cooler, high-flow environments. Should not be kept with large, aggressive, or overly active fish that may outcompete it for food.
Size and Growth:
Adult Size: Can grow up to 2–3 inches (5–7.5 cm) in length.
Growth: Slow to moderate growth, with steady development in stable, oxygen-rich, and well-maintained river-style aquarium setups.
Overview:
Homaloptera sp. is a group of hillstream loach-type fish valued by aquarists for their unique river-adapted body shape and peaceful grazing behavior. They are best suited for intermediate aquarists who can provide high-flow, highly oxygenated “river tank” environments with cool, clean water conditions.
