Key Features:
Distinctive Appearance:
A striking cichlid known for its golden-yellow eyes, elongated body shape, and attractive coloration that can range from silver and olive tones to warm golden hues. Its bright eyes and subtle markings give it a distinctive appearance, especially under aquarium lighting. Males often develop stronger coloration and more pronounced fin extensions compared to females.
Graceful Swimmer:
Displays active yet controlled swimming, often moving through open areas of the aquarium while exploring plants, rocks, and decorations. Its confident movements and elegant body shape make it an interesting centerpiece fish.
Behavior:
Generally peaceful but can display mild territorial behavior, especially during breeding or when establishing a preferred area. It is an intelligent and alert species that benefits from a structured environment with hiding spaces and natural décor.
Care Requirements:
Tank Conditions:
Requires a spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming room, rockwork, driftwood, and planted areas for shelter. Ideal water temperature is 72–79°F (22–26°C), with a pH of 6.5–7.8 preferred. Stable water quality, good filtration, and regular maintenance are important for maintaining health and coloration.
Diet:
Omnivorous. Thrives on a varied diet including high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and occasional vegetable matter. A balanced diet supports healthy growth and enhances natural coloration.
Compatibility:
Generally peaceful but may become territorial with similar species or during breeding. Best kept with other medium-sized peaceful community fish that can tolerate its activity level. Avoid aggressive cichlids or very small fish that may be intimidated or viewed as prey.
Size and Growth:
Adult Size:
Typically reaches 8–12 cm (3–5 inches), although juveniles are commonly sold at 4–5 cm.
Growth:
Grows steadily under optimal care, with juveniles developing gradually when provided with clean water, adequate space, and a varied diet. Good nutrition and stable conditions help improve body shape, coloration, and overall health.
