Key Features:

Distinctive Appearance: Known for its long, torpedo-shaped body covered in hard, diamond-shaped ganoid scales and a long, narrow snout filled with sharp teeth. It has an olive to brownish-green coloration with darker mottling, giving it a prehistoric, armored look.

Ambush Predator Behavior: A slow-moving but highly efficient predator that often remains still before striking quickly. It is highly aware of movement in the water and is built for sudden bursts of speed rather than constant swimming.

Care Requirements:

Tank Conditions: Requires a very large aquarium or preferably a pond setup with stable, clean water and strong filtration. Ideal water temperature should range between 68–80°F (20–27°C). Prefers neutral to slightly alkaline water with plenty of open swimming space and minimal decorations that could obstruct movement.

Diet: Carnivorous, feeding on live or frozen foods such as fish, shrimp, and high-protein carnivore pellets. Juveniles may accept smaller foods, but adults require larger meaty prey items appropriate to their size.

Compatibility: Generally not community-safe due to its predatory nature. Should be kept alone or with very large, non-aggressive fish that cannot be swallowed. Smaller tank mates will almost certainly be viewed as food.

Size and Growth:

Adult Size: Can grow up to 3–4 feet (90–120 cm) in captivity, and even larger in the wild.

Growth: Moderate to fast growth depending on diet and tank size, with rapid development when young under optimal feeding conditions.

Overview:

Lepisosteus platyrhincus, commonly known as the Florida Gar, is a large prehistoric freshwater predator valued by advanced aquarists for its unique armored appearance and powerful hunting behavior. It is best suited for expert-level fish keepers with access to very large tanks or outdoor pond systems capable of supporting a fast-growing predatory species.
