Key Features:
Distinctive Appearance:
A beautiful golden color variant of the Tench, featuring shimmering yellow to rich golden-orange scales with olive undertones and small red-orange eyes. Its thick, streamlined body, rounded fins, and smooth appearance make it an attractive addition to ponds and large freshwater aquariums.
Graceful Swimmer:
Displays slow, steady, and deliberate swimming movements, often exploring the bottom of the aquarium or pond while searching for food. Its calm behavior and gentle movements create a peaceful and natural atmosphere.
Behavior:
Peaceful, hardy, and social, Golden Tench are excellent community fish for ponds. They are bottom foragers that help consume leftover food and naturally sift through the substrate without disturbing other fish.
Care Requirements:
Tank Conditions:
Best suited to large aquariums or outdoor ponds with plenty of swimming space and a soft sand or fine gravel substrate. Ideal water temperature is 39–75°F (4–24°C), with a pH of 6.5–8.0 preferred. Good filtration, stable water quality, and adequate oxygenation are essential for long-term health.
Diet:
Omnivorous. Thrives on a varied diet including high-quality sinking pellets, pond sticks, earthworms, bloodworms, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and occasional vegetable matter. A balanced diet supports healthy growth, strong condition, and vibrant golden coloration.
Compatibility:
Very peaceful and suitable for community ponds with koi, goldfish, and other non-aggressive coldwater fish. Avoid aggressive species or fish that may compete heavily for food. Their calm nature makes them a great choice for mixed coldwater environments.
Size and Growth:
Adult Size:
Typically reaches 30–45 cm (12–18 inches), although juveniles are commonly sold at 6–8 cm.
Growth:
Grows steadily under optimal conditions and may take several years to reach full size. With clean water, adequate space, and a nutritious diet, Golden Tench develop excellent body condition and maintain their bright golden coloration.
