Key Features:

Distinctive Appearance: Known for its armored, bronze to greenish-gold body with a smooth, rounded belly and short barbels around the mouth. Corydoras aeneus typically shows a metallic sheen, while Corydoras schultzei can appear slightly darker or more patterned depending on the variant. Both share the classic “armored catfish” look that makes them easily recognizable in freshwater aquariums.

Social Bottom Dweller: A highly social, peaceful schooling fish that spends most of its time actively foraging along the substrate in groups. Their constant movement and gentle behavior make them excellent “cleanup crew” fish that add life to the lower levels of the tank.

Care Requirements:

Tank Conditions: Requires a well-maintained aquarium with soft, sandy substrate to protect its sensitive barbels. Ideal water temperature should range between 72–79°F (22–26°C). Prefers neutral to slightly acidic water with good oxygenation and gentle filtration. A planted tank with open swimming space and shaded areas is ideal.

Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on sinking pellets, wafers, and a variety of frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and insect larvae. They should not be relied on only for leftover food and need a dedicated sinking diet.

Compatibility: Extremely peaceful and best kept in groups of at least 6 or more. Suitable for most community tanks with other non-aggressive fish. Should not be kept with large predatory species or rough substrate that could damage their barbels.

Size and Growth:

Adult Size: Can grow up to 2.5–3 inches (6–7.5 cm) in length.

Growth: Moderate growth, with steady development when kept in stable, well-oxygenated water and a proper group setting.

Overview:

Corydoras aeneus / Corydoras schultzei are popular freshwater schooling catfish among aquarists due to their peaceful nature, hardiness, and constant bottom-level activity. They are ideal for beginner to intermediate aquarists and thrive in community aquariums with soft substrates, groups, and stable water conditions.
