Ceratophyllum demersum, commonly known as hornwort, is an oxygenating aquatic plant that can be a great addition to ponds or aquariums. This submerged plant has a delicate appearance with its fine, feathery leaves, but it is actually quite hardy and easy to care for. Hornwort is a fast-growing plant that can help control algae and provide oxygen for fish and other aquatic creatures. Its bright green colour can add a pop of colour to the underwater environment.
Why we like it:
- Helps to oxygenate and clarify the water in ponds or aquariums
- Provides shelter and food for aquatic creatures
- Easy to propagate and low maintenance
What to know:
- Hornwort can be propagated by simply breaking off a piece and planting it in the substrate
- It can be used as a floating plant or anchored to the substrate
- Hornwort prefers bright light and cooler water temperatures
- It can be sensitive to some water treatments, so it's important to research compatibility before adding any chemicals to the water
- Hornwort can shed a lot of debris and should be regularly pruned to maintain its appearance and prevent clogging of filters
Height and Spread:
- Can grow up to 3m long in the wild, but typically smaller in a controlled environment
