Key Features:
Distinctive Appearance: Known for its deep metallic green to bronze coloration with subtle iridescent blue-green sheen, often appearing more intense in “XL” line specimens. It has a sleek, wild-type body shape with shorter fins compared to ornamental bettas, giving it a more natural, streamlined look.
Wild-Type Behavior: A hardy and alert species with strong territorial instincts. It is more active and less “flowy” than domesticated bettas, often exploring its environment and reacting quickly to movement.
Care Requirements:
Tank Conditions: Requires a well-maintained aquarium with stable water conditions and gentle filtration. Ideal water temperature should range between 76–82°F (24–28°C). Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water and benefits from a heavily planted setup with hiding spots and surface cover.
Diet: Omnivorous, feeding on a variety of foods including high-quality pellets, flakes, frozen/live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and insect-based protein sources.
Compatibility: Generally semi-aggressive. Males are territorial and should not be housed together. Can be kept with peaceful community fish in a carefully structured tank, but caution is needed due to its assertive nature.
Size and Growth:
Adult Size: Can grow up to 3–3.5 inches (7.5–9 cm) in length.
Growth: Moderate growth, with strong development under stable, well-oxygenated conditions.
Overview:
Betta mahachaiensis, especially in its “XL” line form, is a wild-type Siamese fighting fish variant prized for its metallic coloration and hardy nature. It is popular among aquarium enthusiasts who prefer more natural-looking bettas and is best suited for intermediate aquarists with stable, planted aquarium setups.
