Key Features:

Distinctive Appearance:
Known for its vivid red and orange finnage (especially in males), often with extended dorsal fin rays and striking contrast against a yellow to golden body base. The “double” or “double red” variant shows intensified coloration, making it especially eye-catching in planted aquariums.

Behavior & Personality:
A small but bold dwarf cichlid with a lot of personality. Males are territorial, especially during breeding, while females are more reserved. Despite their cichlid nature, they are generally peaceful in a well-structured community setup.

Care Requirements:

Tank Conditions:
Requires a well-established aquarium with plenty of cover such as caves, plants, and driftwood to establish territories. Ideal temperature range is 75–82°F (24–28°C). Prefers soft to moderately hard water with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.5). Stable water quality is essential.

Diet:
Omnivorous with a strong preference for protein. Eats high-quality flakes or micro pellets, frozen foods (like bloodworms and brine shrimp), and occasional live foods. A varied diet helps maintain coloration and breeding condition.

Compatibility:
Generally peaceful in community tanks with similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Best kept with calm species that occupy upper or mid-water levels. Avoid housing with overly aggressive fish or other territorial dwarf cichlids unless the tank is large and well-structured.

Size and Growth:

Adult Size:
Males can grow up to 3 inches (7–8 cm), females slightly smaller at around 2 inches (5 cm).

Growth Rate:
Moderate growth, reaching full coloration and size within several months under optimal conditions.

Overview:

Apistogramma cacatuoides Double Red is a highly popular dwarf cichlid among aquarists due to its vibrant coloration and engaging behavior. It is best suited for intermediate aquarists who can provide stable water conditions and structured tank environments with caves and plant cover.
