Transplanting/Growing On
When the seedlings have produced about 4 leaves, thin to 30cm apart. Keep moist during the growing season.
Aftercare
Water plants generously and regularly, until lifting to force on. Protect plants from pests using a slug barrier and insect netting held above the crop during summer.
Forcing
Lift crowns in October/November and cut off leaves 2.5cm above the crown. Place 5 roots upright in a 20cm pot. Pack around the roots with moist soil or sand. Place in darkness around 12°C in e.g. a dark cupboard. You will have tender, blanched chicory ready in approximately three weeks.
