The South American Bumblebee Catfish, scientifically known as Microglanis iheringi, is a captivating species native to South America, particularly found in the rivers and streams of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. This small catfish species, named for its resemblance to a bumblebee due to its distinctive black and yellow stripes, adds a unique flair to freshwater aquariums. Despite its diminutive size, reaching only around 5-7 centimeters (2-3 inches) in length, the Bumblebee Catfish possesses an intriguing personality and exhibits interesting behaviors. Due to its manageable size and peaceful nature, it is a popular choice among aquarists, especially those with smaller aquarium setups.

Origin: The South American Bumblebee Catfish is native to South America, particularly found in the rivers and streams of Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay.

Temperature: Maintaining a stable temperature between 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F) in the aquarium mimics the warm waters of its natural habitat and supports the well-being of the Bumblebee Catfish.

Water Quality: These catfish thrive in well-oxygenated water with a pH range between 6.0 to 7.5 and moderate water hardness. Ensuring good water quality through regular maintenance and filtration is essential for their health and longevity.

Aquarium Size: A tank size of at least 38 liters (10 gallons) is suitable for keeping a small group of Bumblebee Catfish. Provide ample hiding spots such as caves, driftwood, and plants to create a secure environment for these shy and nocturnal fish.

Feeding: South American Bumblebee Catfish are omnivores and will accept a varied diet in captivity. Offer them a combination of sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small crustaceans. They also graze on algae and organic matter, contributing to the overall cleanliness of the aquarium.

Lifespan: With proper care, South American Bumblebee Catfish can live for around 5 to 7 years in captivity. Providing a balanced diet, suitable tank mates, and a stress-free environment contributes to their longevity.

Behavior and Personality: Despite their small size, Bumblebee Catfish exhibit fascinating behaviors, often darting in and out of hiding places and scavenging for food during the night. They are peaceful and can coexist with a variety of tank mates, but ensure compatibility with species that won't outcompete them for food or harass them.
