The Pristella Tetra, scientifically known as Pristella maxillaris, is a small and peaceful freshwater fish native to South America. It is also commonly referred to as the X-Ray Fish due to its nearly transparent body, which allows a view of its internal organs and bones. This unique feature, coupled with the fish's hardy nature and ease of care, makes it a favorite among both novice and experienced aquarists. The Pristella Tetra is distinguished by its translucent body, edged with hints of white, yellow, and black on its fins, and a characteristic black and white pattern on its caudal fin. They are a schooling species and exhibit the most natural and appealing behaviors when kept in groups.

Origin:
Pristella Tetras are found in the coastal waters of South America, including Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil, and Suriname. Their habitat ranges from slow-moving rivers and streams to brackish waters near the ocean, showcasing their adaptability to different water conditions.

Temperature:
The ideal temperature range for Pristella Tetras is between 24°C to 28°C (75°F to 82°F). Maintaining this temperature range helps ensure the health and well-being of these fish.

Water Quality:
Pristella Tetras are known for their adaptability to a wide range of water conditions. They prefer a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 and can tolerate a range of water hardness, making them suitable for many community aquarium setups.

Aquarium Size:
A minimum aquarium size of 40 liters (10 gallons) is recommended for a small school of Pristella Tetras. However, a larger tank is preferable to provide ample swimming space and to accommodate a larger school, which can enhance the fish's social behavior and overall well-being.

Feeding:
They are omnivorous and will accept a wide variety of foods. A balanced diet for Pristella Tetras should include high-quality flake food, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and daphnia, and occasional vegetable supplements. This varied diet helps maintain their health and vibrant appearance.

Lifespan:
With proper care, Pristella Tetras can live for up to 5 years. Their longevity in an aquarium depends on the quality of care, including diet, water quality, and stress levels within the tank.

Behavior and Personality:
Pristella Tetras are peaceful and sociable fish that thrive in groups. They are best kept in schools of six or more to promote natural schooling behavior, which can reduce stress and increase their lifespan. They are suitable for community tanks with other peaceful fish of similar size.
